(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team kicked off the 2014 season in impressive fashion nearly doubling up on StFX 84-44 at the Homburg Centre on Saturday night.

Fourth-year Huskies guard Laura Langille (Bedford, N.S.) opened up the first-quarter scoring, making a three-point field goal 10 seconds into the game. This would set the tone for the Saint Mary's squad, who went on to finish the game 14-for-23 from three-point range.

The Huskies led 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, the Saint Mary's defence held the X-Women to just three points - all from second-year forward Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, Ont.).

After making good on four more three-point shots and two layups, the Huskies pulled away 35-14 heading into halftime.

In the third, Saint Mary's outscored StFX 27-14 to bring the score to 62-28. The Huskies would secure the victory in the fourth, pulling away to a final score of 84-44.

Rookie guard Veronica Vaickus (Baie-Comeau, Que.) lead the way for Saint Mary's with 25 points off the bench in 20 minutes of play, including making 8-for-10 from the floor and 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, to go along with six steals.

Katrina Murrell (Markham, Ont.), Carlie Nugent (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, Que.) all reached double digits in points.

Lessard managed a team-high 14 points for the X-Women and seven rebounds. Second-year guard Melissa Gottschall (Antigonish, N.S.) added 12 points and another three rebounds for StFX.

The X-Women move on to visit the Acadia Axewomen (0-2) Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.

The Huskies are back in action Friday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. when they host the UNB Varsity Reds (2-0).
