X-Women handle Capers 82-55, move into second place

The StFX X-Women basketball team moved into sole possession of second place in the AUS standings, improving to 5-4 after an 82-55 victory over the Cape Breton Capers Tuesday evening at the StFX Oland Centre.

The X-Women opened up with a 20-9 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Subway player of the game Vanessa Pickard led the blue and white with 19 points, including 5-for-7 from the three-point line. She also had 3 rebounds, 3 blocks and a pair of steals.

Rebecca Sheehan scored 15 points and had 5 rebounds, while Lia St. Pierre contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds. Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee added 12 points for the X-Women, who shot 48.4% from field goal range.

The Capers had three players in double scoring digits including Tanira McClurkin (12), Naudia Campbell (11) and Colleen Keane (10). McClurkin and Campbell each had 6 rebounds in the game.

The Capers were 31.1% in field goal shooting, 15.8% from the three-point arc and 58.3% from the free throw line. StFX shot 45.0% in three-pointers and were 72.2% from the free throw line.

After StFX's 20-9 first quarter run, the Capers came back for a closer 16-15 second quarter in favor of the X-Women. The 36-24 StFX lead at halftime grew to 56-39 after three quarters of play. The X-Women closed out with a ten-point advantage in the fourth quarter to pull out the 82-55 win.

With the four-point victory, the X-Women (5-4) pulled ahead of both Acadia (6-1) and Dalhousie (6-2) who are tied for third place in the AUS standings with 16 points apiece, to gain sole possession of second place with 18 points, two back of first place Saint Mary's (7-0).

The Capers fall to 2-6 and are in sixth place with four points.

They will host the fifth place Memorial Sea-Hawks (3-5) in a pair of matches at home this coming weekend. The X-Women travel to Fredericton on Saturday to face the last place UNB Varsity Reds (1-7). Game time is 8:00 pm in New Brunswick.
