(SYDNEY, N.S.) The Cape Breton Capers have claimed the 2018 AUS men's soccer title with a 2-0 win over the UNB Reds in the Subway AUS Men's Soccer Championship final.
The U SPORTS defending champion and no. 1-ranked Capers continued their undefeated run with the victory, which marks their third consecutive AUS title.
The Capers used the wind to their advantage and played forward for much of the first half. AUS first team all-star Cory Bent (Preston, United Kingdom) scored the eventual game-winner—an incredible four-touch goal in the 37th minute. Bent was able to corral a pass form Joel Eckert-Ayenza (Pulhaim, Germany) and chip the Ball over UNB keeper Evan Barker (Winnipeg, Man.).
The wind was with UNB's attack in the second half, but the Capers were able to keep possession and defend well. Bent earned a penalty in the 78th minute and Eckert-Ayenza made good on the penalty kick.
Barker made some great saves to keep the game at 2-0, but the Reds would come no closer.
Ben Jackson earned the clean sheet for the Capers.
Bent was named Subway Player of the Game for his game-winning goal and earned the championship MVP award.
Dan Walker (Fredericton, N.B.) was named player of the game for the Reds in the loss.
As conference finalists, both teams have earned a berth in the U SPORTS national championship being hosted by UBC in Vancouver Nov. 8 to 11.
