Tigers down Axemen 1-0 to advance to semifinals versus defending champion Capers

(SYDNEY, N.S.) The fourth-seeded Dalhousie Tigers narrowly got past the no. 5 seed Acadia Axemen by a score of 1-0 to advance to the semifinal round of the Subway AUS Men's Soccer Championship.

The men's championship is being hosted concurrently with the women's championship by Cape Breton University in Sydney, N.S.

AUS first team all-star Ben Grondin (Calgary, Alta.) showed why he was named the conference's top keeper, making 10 saves to secure the win for Dalhousie.

The game remained scoreless until the 64th minute when fourth-year Tigers striker Kallen Heenan (Dartmouth, N.S.) scored off an assist from fourth-year midfielder Freddy Bekkers (Halifax, N.S.).

Heenan was Dalhousie's leading scorer through the regular season with six goals and four assists for 10 points.

Acadia pressed in the final minutes to tie it but Dalhousie stayed strong at the back, led by AUS second team all-star Isaiah McCullough (Sackville, N.S.). 

Grondin was named Subway Player of the Game for his shutout win.

Acadia's Gordon McLaughlin (Peterborough, Ont.) was named the player of the game for the Axemen with four shots on goal.

With the win, the Tigers now advance to face the U SPORTS no. 1-ranked and top-seeded Cape Breton Capers in tomorrow's first men's semifinal matchup at 4:30 p.m.

The defending national champion Capers were undefeated in the regular season with a 10-0-2 record.

Dalhousie and Cape Breton just once during the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 14 in Sydney, N.S. The Capers came away with a 2-0 win.
