(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The UNB Varsity Reds men's soccer team have guaranteed themselves a first place finish in the AUS for the third year in a row after topping Mount Allison 5-0.
They remain undefeated this season, with a record of 10-0-2, and this week were ranked the number two team in the country by the CIS.
The V-Reds took to the field with a good deal of confidence this game and genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves on what was a cold and very rainy night.
The first goal came about halfway into the first half, when Shea Nordheim kicked a clean shot past Mount Allison's defenders and into the net.
Around 15 minutes later, UNB would score again. This time George Lawton, who has recently returned to play after sitting out the first bit of the season with an injury, found the net. Marcus Lees had the assist, and UNB went into halftime up 2-0.
The early minutes of the second half belonged to Kenneth Van Aarle. He scored two goals in less than 10 minutes, and there was no denying the V-Reds had taken control of the game.
The fifth and final goal came around the 64th minute, when Nordheim landed a header past the Mounties keeper for his second goal of the game.
Nordheim, who is in his final season with UNB, says the team is feeling confident with one game left to go before the AUS championship.
"Coming to the end of the season, we're looking forward to playoffs and trying to peak for the championship and nationals, so it looks like things are coming together well," Nordheim said.
"These are my last few games as a Varsity Red, and I'm really enjoying it. I'm just trying to make the most of it out there."
Subway player of the game honours went to Kenneth Van Aarle. In the net for the shutout was Brandon Eagle.
The Varsity Reds play next on Friday, Oct. 24, when they host Saint Mary's at 7:15 p.m.
The Mounties host Acadia at the same time.
