Mesut Mert named Head Coach of Saint Mary's Men's Soccer

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Mesut Mert, former player and long time assistant coach, has been named the head coach of the Saint Mary's men's soccer team. Mert takes over from former head coach, Stewart Galloway, who retired earlier this month after 22 years behind the bench.

Galloway, a former player at UNB, won 7 AUS championships, 2 CIS silver and one bronze medal during his time as head coach. Galloway took over the program in 1992 from Peter Wicha, who was preceded Roy Clements.

Mesut becomes the fourth head coach of the men's soccer program in its 50-year history.

Mert played for the Huskies from 1999 - 2003 and during that time was named an AUS Rookie of the Year, twice won the CIS Player of the Year Award, was a two-time Saint Mary's Male Athlete of the Year and a member of the Canadian University Games Soccer Team in 2003-2004.

Mesut also played professionally with the Calgary Mustangs and Montreal impact from 2004 through 2007.

In addition to coaching at Saint Mary's, Mesut is currently the Director of Player and Coach Development at Suburban FC and coach of the Suburban Men's team.

Stewart Galloway has nothing but praise for the incoming coach. "Mesut will be a great addition to the men's soccer program. It has been a pleasure working with him as a player and as an assistant coach and I know he will be very successful with the program going forward.
