Huskies earn weekend sweep to move into third in men's hockey standings

The Saint Mary's Huskies played to wins over the UPEI Panthers and Acadia Axemen in Week 7 of AUS men's hockey action, allowing them to collect four points and move into third in the standings.

The Huskies first visited the UPEI Panthers Friday night, skating to a 4-1 victory. Mitchell Balmas and Keith Getson each had a goal and an assist, while Justin MacPherson and Logan DeNoble also found the back of the net in the win, while Kyle Maksimovich scored the lone goal for UPEI.

Saint Mary's then hosted the Acadia Axemen Saturday night, earning a huge 6-1 win in Halifax. Saint Mary's goals came from Keith Getson (2), Andrew Coxhead (2), Bradey Johnson and Mitchell Balmas, with the lone Acadia goal coming from Eric Henderson.

The UNB Reds remain atop the AUS men's hockey standings, earning their sixth straight victory this weekend to extend their record to 12-1 on the season.

The Reds kicked off the weekend with a 6-2 win over the StFX X-Men Friday night. Nicolas Guay had two goals and an assist as the Reds used a strong third period to defeat the X-Men. Guay was named Subway Player of the Game after recording his second straight three-point game. Tyler BolandJames Phelan and Mark Rassell each added a goal and an assist in the win, while Liam Hawel and Zack Trott (PP) scored for StFX in the loss.

The Reds then blanked the Dalhousie Tigers 6-0 in Fredericton Saturday. James Phelan scored once and assisted on another pair of goals to lead the Reds to the victory. Phelan earned Subway Player of the Game honours for his efforts. Other UNB goals came from Isaac Nurse (2), Rassell, Brady Gilmour and Samuel Dove-McFalls, while Rylan Parenteau made 17 saves in net for the shutout.

The X-Men bounced back from their loss Friday night to double the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus 4-2 Saturday night. Adam Holwell (PP), Matthew Philip, Jacob Hudson and Liam Hawel all found the back of the net in the win, with Michael Cyr and Nathael Roy both tallying power-play goals for Moncton in the loss.

The Aigles Bleus came back from a two-goal deficit and Michael Cyr scored a hattrick to defeat the Dalhousie Tigers 5-3 Friday night. Teammates Nathael Roy and Remy Anglehart both got on the board in the win, with Derek Gentile, Chandler Yakimowicz and Darien Kielb finding the back of the net for Dalhousie in the loss.

The Acadia Axemen edged the Panthers 5-4 in overtime Wednesday night after a high-scoring third period. Mason McCarty was the hero of the game, scoring a powerplay goal just 29 seconds into OT to earn the victory for the visiting Axemen. Acadia tallies in regulation came from Eric Henderson, Johnny Corneil (PP), Loch Morrison and Peyton Hoyt (PP), with Kyle Maksimovich, Drake Pilon, Jordan Maher and Matt Brassard scoring on the UPEI side.
