Reds lead men's hockey standings with fourth-straight win

The UNB Reds skated to wins over the Acadia Axemen and Saint Mary's Huskies this weekend, allowing them to earn their fourth-straight victory to regain their spot atop the AUS men's hockey standings.

After three consecutive weekends on the road, the Reds returned home Friday and scored three times in the second period on route to a 6-1 win over the Acadia Axemen. The Reds made a winner of third string goaltender Tanner Somers, who made his UNB debut. UNB goals came from Jason Williams, Nicolas Guay, Benjamin Gagne, Brady Gilmour, Maculey Carson (PP) and Tyler Boland (PP). Jack Flaman's powerplay goal was the only tally on the Axemen side.

Nicolas Guay had two goals and an assist to lead the Reds in a 4-1 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday, capping a 2-0 weekend for the Reds. Guay's three-point night earned him Subway Player of the Game. Austen Keating added three points of his own with a goal and two assists, while Tyler Boland tallied two assists, and Kade Landry added a goal in the win. The lone goal from Saint Mary's came from Mitchell Balmas.

In a Wednesday night matchup at the Charles V. Keating Centre, the StFX X-Men outscored the Dalhousie Tigers 5-2. Sam Allison earned the first star and was named Subway Player of the Game, finishing the night with a goal. Other StFX tallies came from Jacob Hudson (PP), Matthre Philip, Adam Holwell and Zack Trott, while Brett Crossley (PP) and Campbell Pickard (PP) found the back of net for Dalhousie in the loss.

The X-Men then visited the UPEI Panthers in Charlottetown Friday night, where the Panthers scored three goals in each period en route to 9-1 victory over the X-Men. Sophomore forward Jordan Maher and veteran defenceman Owen Headrick led the charge with a pair of goals each, while Kurtis Henry and Drake Pilon added their first of the season. Matt BrassardKyle Maksimovich and Danil Antropov each found the back of the net as well. Carson MacKinnon had four assists on the night, while Filip Rydstrom added three. 

The Panthers split their weekend games, falling to the Tigers 5-2 in Halifax Saturday evening. Campbell Pickard was awarded player of the game honours after scoring two goals, while teammates Barret Kirwin, Derek Gentile and Shaun Miller also recorded tallies in the win. Matt Brassard and Kaleb Pearson recorded goals for UPEI in the loss.

The Saint Mary's Huskies played to a 3-1 victory over the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus Friday evening, with Cedric Ralph finishing the evening with two goals and an assist. Zachary Hoffman scored a powerplay tally in the win, while Maxime Boudreau scored the lone goal on the Moncton side.

The Aigles Bleus bounced back Saturday evening with a 5-1 win over the Axemen. Moncton goals came from Nathael Roy, Michael Cyr, Olivier-Luc Hache, Denis Toner and Maxime Boudreau (PP). Acadia's lone goal came from Garrett McFadden.
