Reds win four straight to rise up in men's hockey standings

With weekend wins over the StFX X-Men and Dalhousie Tigers, the UNB Reds have earned four straight victories to rise up the AUS men's hockey standings.

Friday evening, the Reds hosted the X-Men in a game filled with emotion, where they earned a 6-3 victory. Matthew Boucher scored twice to lead the Reds and was named the Subway Player of the Game. Kris Bennett, Matt Murphy, James McEwan and Alexandre Goulet (PP) also got on the board in the victory, while Matthew Graham, Bryson Cianfrone (PP) and Anthony Difruscia scored for the X-Men in the loss.

They then hosted the Tigers Saturday evening which ended in a 4-3 shootout win. Alex Goulet and Matthew Boucher scored shootout goals, and Samuel Harvey made two shootout saves to give UNB the win. Goals in regulation from the Reds came from Mark Simpson, Mark Rassell and Patrick Watling (PP) while Andrew Shewfelt scored twice for the Tigers with teammate Dillon Boucher adding a tally in the loss. The Reds now sit with a 5-1 record to sit in second in the standings.

The Acadia Axemen have also won six straight to sit at the top of the standings. The Axemen visited the Saint Mary's Huskies Wednesday evening, doubling them 4-2. Garrett McFadden earned Subway Player of the Game honours with a goal and two assists in the win, while teammates Maurizio Colella, Ryan Foss and Cristiano Digiacinto also found the back of the net. Keith Getson and Mitchell Balmas earned goals for the Huskies in the loss.

Acadia then went on to host the UPEI Panthers Saturday evening, topping them 4-3. Goals from Acadia in the win came from Rodney Southam, Johnny Corneil, Murizio Colella and Stephen Harper, while UPEI was led by Kyle Maksimovich who recorded two tallies and Kameron Kielly who found the back of the net for the Panthers in the loss.  

Despite their loss to the Axemen on Wednesday, the Huskies bounced back big Friday night, earning a huge 8-2 victory over the UPEI Panthers. Defenceman Nick Welsh recorded a career-high six assists and was named Subway Player of the Game for his Friday night performance. Anthony Repaci, Mitchell Balmas and Stephen Johnson netted two goals apiece, while Dylan DiPerna and Jonathan Hampton put away the other two. Chad Labelle and Darian Pilon found the back of the net for the Panthers. 

The Dalhousie Tigers split their weekend games as they earned their second win of the season with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus Friday evening. A power play goal at 2:54 of the overtime period by Connor Welsh lifted the Tigers to victory. Cameron Thompson and Aiden Jamieson (PP) also found the back of the net for the Tigers, while Olivier Desjardins and Ryan Chiasson got on the board for Moncton. 

The Aigles Bleus snapped their five-game losing streak Saturday night as they doubled the X-Men 6-3 in Moncton. Goals came from Moncton's Maxime St-Cyr (PP), Robbie Graham, Danick Crete, Vincent Deslauriers, Ryan Chiasson (PS) and Edouard Michard (EN), while Adam Holwell (PP), Bryson Cianfrone (2) scored for the X-Men in the loss.
