The St. Thomas Tommies have nominated social science student and men's hockey player Rankyn Campbell for the 2016 James Bayer Memorial Scholarship Award.

A right wing for the Tommies, Campbell played in 27 games this year, finishing his sophomore season with four goals and three assists. In just his second season, Campbell was named an alternate team captain due to his leadership on and off of the ice.

The criminology and sociology student achieved academic all-Canadian status in his rookie season and is on pace to repeat the accomplishment this year.

Despite the demands of being a varsity athlete, Campbell has completed 18 credit hours in each semester of study as he prepares for graduate studies.

He also dedicates his time to several volunteer initiatives and events in the community, including the Children's Wish Foundation's Walk for Wishes, the Terry Fox Run, the Food for Friends Mirimachi food drive, Relay for Life and the Fredericton Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival.

Additionally, Campbell has volunteered with various local schools for events such as fairs, carnivals and sports days.

"Rankyn has been a very big part of helping us try to turn the program around," said Tommies men's hockey head coach Kyle McAllister. "On a team that has not had much success, Rankyn has always maintained this positive attitude and relentless work ethic. Whether it is at the rink for practice or games, or if it's in his academics, he gives 100 per cent all of the time. He is the type of person that every student-athlete should strive to be."
