AUS Men's Hockey Weekly Round Up: Week 9

Friday, January 8

StFX 5 at UPEI 4 (OT) (Box Score)

The StFX X-Men visited the UPEI Panthers in Charlottetown on Friday night. The X-Men were the first on the board with the lone goal of the first coming from forward Eric Locke. The X-Men dominated the scoring in the second frame, scoring three goals in seven minutes to take a 4-0 lead heading into the third period. StFX goals in the second came from fourth-year forward Cory MacIntosh, Blake Gal, and Craig Duininck. The Panthers came out flying in the third, with a goal just nine seconds into the frame from forward Brent Andrews. A power-play goal from Brent Andrews, and his second of the game, followed by a tally from teammate Beni Berisha at 07:59 in the third put the Panthers within one. With just two seconds left in regulation and the Panthers down by one, UPEI's Ryan MacKinnon scored to tie the game at 4-4, forcing over-time. At 06:32 into overtime, X-Men forward Cory MacIntosh scored his second of the night to give StFX the 5-4 victory over UPEI.

Dalhousie 0 at UNB 4 (Box Score)

On Friday night, the UNB Varsity Reds hosted the Dalhousie Tigers in Fredericton. The Varsity Reds opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Dylan Willick at 06:47 in the opening frame, to hold a 1-0 lead heading into the second. The Varsity Reds came out flying in the second, scoring three goals in just over two minutes, to take a four goal. Goals from UNB in the second came from forward Rob Mignardi, and two from Dylan Willick, including a short-handed tally earning him a hat-trick in the game. After a scoreless final frame, the Varsity Reds held on for the 4-0 victory over the Tigers, with Alex Dubeau earning the shutout, stopping all 23 shots he faced.

Moncton 1 at Saint Mary's 4 (Box Score)

The Moncton Aigles Bleus travelled to Halifax on Friday night to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies. The Huskies opened the scoring early in the first period with a goal from Anthony Repaci at 02:04, putting Saint Mary's ahead by one heading into the second period. The lone goal of the second came from Moncton's Robbie Graham at 14:29 to tie the game at 1-1 after the second. A power-play goal from Huskies Stephen Gillard at 04:02 into the final frame allowed Saint Mary's to regain their lead, followed by a goal from teammate Taylor Burke at 14:50 to increase their lead to two. The Huskies secured the win over the Aigles Bleus with an empty-net goal from forward Stephen MacAulay, to take the game 4-1 at home.

St. Thomas 2 at Acadia 7 (Box Score)

The Acadia Axemen faced the St. Thomas Tommies at home in Wolfville on Friday night. After a scoreless first period, Axemen forward Mike Cazolla opened the scoring, followed by goals from teammates Kyle Farrell (SH), Chance Braid (PP), and Brett Thompson, allowing Acadia to hold a 4-0 lead heading into the final frame. At 05:16 in the third, a goal from Tommies forward Connor Sanvido put St. Thomas on the board, but was quickly followed by a short-handed goal from Acadia's Boston Leier, allowing the Axemen to hold their four goal lead. A power-play goal from Tommies Connor Sanvido, and his second of the night put the Tommies back within three, put it would not be enough as goals from Acadia's Brett Thompson and Daniel Pettersson allowed the Axemen to cruise to a 7-2 victory.

Saturday, January 9

Moncton 2 at Acadia 8 (Box Score

The Acadia Axemen hosted the Moncton Aigles Bleus in Wolfville on Saturday night. The top ranked Axemen came out flying to start the game, scoring four goals in the opening frame. First period Axemen goals came from freshman defenceman Brett Cote, freshman forward Kyle Farrell, and two from fourth-year forward Travis Randell, giving Acadia the 4-0 edge heading into the second. The lone goal of the second came from Acadia third-year defenceman Tyler Ferry at the 01:24 mark, giving the Axemen a five goal lead after the second. In the third, a power-play goal from Acadia forward Brett Thompson, followed by a tally from teammate Kyle Farrell increased the Axemen's lead to seven. At 04:56 in the final frame, the Aigles Bleus got on the board with a power-play tally from forward Alex Saulnier, to cut Acadia's lead to six. A goal from Acadia's Zachery Franko at 16:05 regained the Axemen's seven goal lead, until Moncton's Danny Chiasson scored with under two minutes remaining. Despite Moncton's come back efforts it would not be enough as Acadia earned the 8-2 victory.

Dalhousie 1 at UPEI 2 (OT) (Box Score

The Dalhousie Tigers travelled to Charlottetown on Saturday to take on the UPEI Panthers. The Tigers were the first on the board with a power-play tally from fourth-year forward Andrew Wigginton at 11:36 in the opening frame, to hold a 1-0 lead heading into the second. At 07:15 in the second period, a power-play goal from UPEI freshman forward Ryan MacKinnon tied the game at 1-1. After a scoreless third period, the game headed into over-time. At 08:46 into the extra frame, a tally from UPEI forward Mason Wilgosh gave the Panthers the 2-1 over-time victory over the Tigers. 


St. Thomas 0 at Saint Mary's 7 (Box Score

The Saint Mary's Huskies hosted the St. Thomas Tommies at the Halifax Forum on Saturday night. After a scoreless first period, the Huskies opened the scoring at 05:06 in the second with a tally from freshman forward Austyn Hardie, followed by a goal from teammate Jamie Doornbosch, giving Saint Mary's a 2-0 lead heading into the third. The Huskies dominated throughout the third, scoring five goals in 10 minutes, to earn a 7-0 victory over the Tommies. Third period Huskies goals came from freshman forward Taylor Burke (PP), fifth-year forward Stephen Johnston (2), fourth-year forward Kyle Pereira, and third-year forward Steven Beyers

The StFX X-Men travelled to Fredericton on Saturday night to face the UNB Varsity Reds. The Varsity Reds came out flying in the opening frame, getting on the board early with a power-play tally from sophomore forward Christopher Caissy just four minutes into regulation. At 08:16 in the frame, a goal from UNB fifth-year forward Tyler Carroll, followed by tallies from teammates Stephen Anderson and Christopher Caissy gave the Varsity Reds a 4-0 edge heading into the second. In the second period, a goal at 02:05 by UNB fourth-year forward Rob Mignardi increased the Varsity Reds lead to five. At 14:26 in the second, StFX made their way onto the board with a goal from freshman forward Michael Clarke, but was quickly followed by a short-handed goal from UNB third-year forward Phillippe Halley, keeping the Varsity Reds ahead by five. In the third period, a power-play goal from StFX freshman forward Holden Cook would cut UNB's lead to four, but would not be enough as the Varsity Reds earned the 6-2 victory.
