AUS Men's Hockey Weekly Roundup: Week 3

Acadia 3 at Dalhousie 4 (SO) (Box Score)

The Dalhousie Tigers hosted the Acadia Axemen on Wednesday night during their home opener at the Halifax Forum. Just over two minutes into the game, sophomore forward Tanner Williams put the Tigers on the board with his first goal of the season. A goal at 09:56 from Acadia forward Zachery Franko put the Axemen on the board, but was followed by a tally from Dalhousie forward Fabian Walsh to keep the Tigers ahead by 1 at the end of the first period. In the second, a power play goal from Axemen sophomore defenceman Matthew Pufahl tied the game at 2. In the third period, Fabian Walsh scored his second goal of the game, giving the Tigers the 3-2 edge. However, Acadia's Zachery Franko scored his second of the game with just four seconds left, to tie the game at 3, forcing overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, the game headed into a shootout, with Tigers rookie forward Phil Gadoury getting the lone tally, ending the game in a 4-3 win for Dalhousie.

UPEI 2 at Moncton 4 (Box Score)  

The Moncton Aigles Bleus edged the UPEI Panthers 4-2 in Moncton on Wednesday evening. UPEI defenceman Ryan MacKinnon opened the scoring by tallying the lone goal of the first period, giving the Panthers the 1-0 lead. In the second period, goals from Moncton forward Alex Saulnier, and UPEI forward Marcus Power kept the Panthers ahead, going into the third. At 05:47 into the third period, Alex Saulnier scored his second of the game for the Aigles Bleus, followed by a tally from teammate Joel Blanchard. With just over 40 seconds left in the game, Pier-Antoine Doin netted an empty net goal for the Aigles Bleus, for a final score of 4-2 over the Panthers.

Saint Mary's 3 at StFX 5 (Box Score)  

The StFX X-Men hosted the Saint Mary's Huskies in their home-opener in Antigonish on Wednesday. After a scoreless first period, Saint Mary's were the first to get on the board in the second period, with a goal from fourth-year defenceman Kyle Pereira. Goals from X-Men forward Eric Locke, and Huskies defenceman Stephen Gillard later in the second kept the Huskies ahead by 1 heading into the third. The X-Men came out hot in the third, with goals from forward Nathan Pancel, forward Cory MacIntosh, and forward Mark Tremaine to put the X-Men up 4-2. Huskies defenceman Kyle Pereira scored his second with 40 seconds left in the third in hopes to tie the game, but it would not be enough as Eric Locke netted an empty net goal and his second of the game for a 5-3 X-Men final.

UNB 5 at St. Thomas 1 (Box Score)  

The UNB Varsity reds visited the St. Thomas Tommies on Wednesday night, hoping to remain undefeated so far this season. The Varsity Reds opened the scoring in the first with a tally from sophomore forward Francis Beauvillier, and a power play goal from forward Philippe Maillet. In the second, a power play goal from UNB forward Cameron Brace and a goal from forward Dylan Willick put the Varsity Reds ahead by four. At 18:10 in the second period, Rankyn Campbell scored the third power play goal of the game, to put the Tommies on the board. A lone goal from UNB forward Cam Critchlow in the third gave the Varsity Reds their four goal lead back. Cameron Brace of the Varsity Reds assisted on Critchlow's goal, having a four point night (1G, 3A) as the Varsity Reds topped the Tommies 5-1, improving their record to 4-0 on the season.

Dalhousie
4 at StFX 5 (OT) (Box Score)


An exciting Friday night matchup in Antigonish between the Dalhousie Tigers and the StFX X-Men had to be decided in overtime. StFX's Blake Gal opened the scoring in the first period. The two squads would trade goals twice to head into the second tied at two apiece. The X-Men increased their lead to 4-2 in the second period, scoring two unanswered goals. But the Tigers rebounded in the third to tie the game to end regulation. StFX sophomore forward Kristoff Kontos was the overtime hero, netting the winner 3:08 into the period.

Acadia 5 at Saint Mary's 2 (Box Score)

 
Three unanswered goals in the third period propelled the Acadia Axemen to a 5-2 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies Friday night at the Halifax Forum. Acadia's Boston Leier opened up the scoring in the first period. Huskies captain Stephen MacAulay responded with a shorthanded goal for Saint Mary's before Leier netted his second goal of the period for the Axemen. The Huskies would tie it up in the second with the only goal of the period coming from Cole Harbour native Mitchell Maynard. Acadia's Brett Thompson notched the game winner at 2:22 of the final frame and teammate Michael Clarke added an insurance goal at 8:22. The Huskies would pull netminder Cole Cheveldave for the extra man to end the game, but Thompson sealed the deal for the visiting Axemen with an empty-net goal at 18:28.

Moncton 4 at St. Thomas 1 (Box Score
The Moncton Aigles Bleus cruised to a 4-1 victory over the St. Thomas Tommies in Fredericton Friday night thanks to three unanswered goals in the second period. Alex Noel opened the scoring for Moncton 9:25 into the first frame and JC Campagna responded at 14:36 for the Tommies. But the second period saw Moncton take over with a shorthanded goal from Danick Emond, a power play marker from Alex Saulnier and another insurance goal from Alex Emond.
