X-Men edge Huskies 5-4

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - StFX's Robert Slaney (Portgual Cove, Nfld.) and Ted Stephens (Whitehorse, Yukon) each had a goal and an assist as the St. Francis Xavier X-Men defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 5-4 Wednesday night at the Halifax Forum.

Stephens' goal at 9:39 of the first period opened the scoring, and Slaney's marker at 7:56 of the second period tied the game at 3-3 heading into the third period. Nathan Chiarlitti (Maple, Ont.), who scored the game winning goal at 8:44 of the third period, was named the Subway player of the game.

After Stephens' goal made it 1-0, Bradley Greene (Tilting, Nfld.) answered back at 14:03 to tie the game at 1-1 going into the first intermission.

The Huskies second goal came from Mitchell Maynard (Cole Harbour, N.S.) at 3:34 of the second period which gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead.

Defenceman, Michael D'Orazio (Richmond Hill, Ont.) added to the lead at 6:16 to making it 3-1.  

The X-Men's Michael Kirkpatrick (North Sydney, N.S.) cut the lead to 3-2 at 7:31 on the power play, followed by Slaney's goal which made it 3-3 after 40 minutes.

The Huskies came back with a goal from Francis Menard (Embrun, Ont.)  at 4:02 of the third period on the power play to give the Huskies a 4-3 lead.  

The X-Men quickly tied it up with a goal from Zack MacQueen (Woodstock, Ont.) to tied it at 4-4 at the 7:59 mark.  

The X-Men took over the lead quickly with a goal by Charlitti to win the game for the X-Men.

Saint Mary's outshot the X-Men 31-27.  X-Men goaltender Drew Owsley (Lethbridge, Alta.) made 27 saves for the win. Anthony Peters (Blyth, Ont.) stopped 22 shots in net for the Huskies.

StFX hits the ice next against the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday night at 7 p.m. and the Huskies host the Acadia Axemen Friday night at the Forum to close up the first semester.
