UNB tops Huskies 5-2 at the Forum

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Philippe Halley (Quebec, Que.) earned Subway player of the game honours as the UNB Varsity Reds defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 5-2 on Friday night at the Halifax Forum.

The game was played before a crowd of 575.

Halley's lone marker at 12:06 of the first period was the third of three straight goals to start the game for the Varsity Reds on their way to a victory in the contest.

UNB got on the board quickly as Dylan Willick (Prince George, B.C.) scored at 1:10 of the first period.  

UNB came back quickly with their second goal when Philippe Maillet (Lachenaie, N.B.) scored at 10:30 to give them 2-0 lead.  

Saint Mary's got their first goal when Mitchell Maynard (Cole Harbour, N.S.) scored at 12:18 to make it 3-1.

The Varsity Reds increased their lead when Cam Braes (Shawnigan Lake, B.C.) scored at 13:44 to give his team a 4-1 going into the first intermission.

Tyler Carroll (Strathroy, Ont.) scored the only goal of the second period at 9:02 to give the Varsity Reds a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third period, first-year defenceman Steven Trojanovic notched a power play marker at 1:41 to narrow the lead for the Huskies

Saint Mary's outshot the Reds 29-28. UNB goaltender David Shantz (Hamilton, Ont.) made 27 saves in the win. Anthony Peters (Blyth, Ont.) stopped 23 shots in goal for Saint Mary's.

The Huskies are back in action tomorrow night against the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus at 7 p.m. at the Forum. The Varsity Reds travel to Antigonish tomorrow night to face the StFX X-Men.
