CIS No. 3 Axemen snap No. 8-ranked Aigles Bleus' unbeaten streak

(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - Coming off an overtime win one night ago against the CIS No. 2-ranked UNB Varsity Reds, the CIS No. 3-ranked Acadia Axemen were back in action for game 6 of a 28-game regular season against the CIS No. 8-ranked and undefeated Moncton Aigles Blues.

It didn't take long for Moncton to jump to an early lead, only 1:04 after puck drop, on the power play. The goal came on a slap spot by Allain Saulnier who got one through a screened Brandon Glover.

The second period picked up where the first left off with lots of physical play, but never the less both teams went scoreless with Acadia out shooting Moncton 16-10.

In the third, it was Moncton who struck first, netting a slap shot past Glover to take a two-goal lead.

On a picture-perfect breakout, not long after killing off a two-minute delay of game penalty, rookie Zachary Franko went upstairs from the slot to put the Axemen within one.

After the Aigles Bleus took a slashing penalty, the momentum shifted in Acadia's favour and on the ensuing man-advantage, Acadia tied the game at two.

First-year defenceman Matthew Pufahl showed great patience waiting for a lane to become available. When it was, Pufahl found Mike Cazzola, who tipped a two-foot backhand home.

Only 26 seconds later, Acadia was on the board again and this time rookie Sam Fioretti jammed one in for the eventual game-winning goal.

Brandon Glover made a big breakaway stop at the midpoint of the second period and turned aside 25 of 27 shots for the win.

Lemay made 32 saves in the losing effort and received the game's second star for his performance.

Acadia's next home game is Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. when they host the CIS No. 10-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies.

The Aigles Bleus' five-game winning streak comes to an end in Wolfville and they will be on the road next weekend in Halifax against Dalhousie.
