Duffy with hat trick, 4 points as Huskies top Tommies 8-2 in home opener

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Saint Thomas Tommies by a score of 8-2 in their home opener at the Halifax Forum. The game was played before a crowd of 355.

Subway player of the game Ben Duffy (Lower Sackville, N.S.) had a hat trick and an assist for four points on the night. Stephen Johnston (Guelph, Ont.) had two goals and an assist, and Mitchell Maynard (Cole Harbour, N.S.) had a goal to lead the Huskies offence.

Anthony Peters (Blyth, Ont.) had 26 saves to power Saint Mary's defensive showing.

The Huskies outshot the Mounties 44-28. The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period with goals from Francis Menard (Embrum, Ont.) and Johnston.

The Huskies started to pull away in second period, scoring four times for a 6-2 advantage. Saint Mary's then added two insurance markers from Duffy and Kyle Pereira (Brampton, Ont.) in the third period.

The two St. Thomas goals came from Bryce Milson (Miramichi, N.B.) and Felix Poulin (Ste-Julie, Que.). They each collected an assist in the game as well. Tyson Teichmann (Belleville, Ont.) turned aside 36 shots in the Tommies net.

The Huskies' next game is tomorrow night against the UPEI Panthers at 7 p.m. at the Halifax Forum. The Tommies next play the Acadia Axemen tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Wolfville.
