X-Men earn back-to-back eight point weekends

The StFX X-Men earned their fifth-straight win this weekend, allowing them to pick up another eight points for the second week in a row, to sit atop the AUS men's basketball standings.

StFX first played to a close 91-88 overtime victory over the Dalhousie Tigers. StFX's Deon Ejim was named the Subway Player of the Game, finishing with a game-high 30 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double. Nginyu Ngala had 24 points, two rebounds and three assists to lead the way for Dalhousie.

Saturday, the U SPORTS No. 7 ranked X-Men used a dominant fourth quarter to secure a 92-77 win over the UNB Reds in Antigonish. After leading by two points heading into the final quarter, the X-Men outpaced the REDS 31-18 in the final frame to take home the win. Antoine Vernon netted a game-high 32 points and took home Subway player of the game honours for STFX, while teammate David Muenkat had a double-double night with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Malik Grant was the player of the game for the Reds, scoring 24 points and adding six rebounds.

From picking up 16 points in the last two weeks of play, the X-Men now have a 12-point lead for first place.

The UPEI Panthers currently sit in second in the standings with a 6-3 record on the season after splitting their weekend games. The Panthers started their weekend with a 95-87 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in Halifax Friday night. Panthers guard Elijah Miller was named Subway Player of the Game with 22 points, six rebounds and two assists. Kamari Scott poured in 19 points and a game-high nine rebounds in the win. Shae Linton-Brown led the Huskies with a U SPORTS career-high 32 points, and added seven rebounds.

The Panthers then fell to the third-place Dalhousie Tigers Saturday evening, as the Tigers earned an 80-73 home win. Samuel Wade earned Subway player of the game honours for Dalhousie after scoring a team-high 17 points and snagging three rounds, while Elijah Miller led the Panthers with a game-high 27 points, adding 5 assists in the loss. 

Despite their loss to the Panthers Friday, the Huskies split their weekend games, playing to a 90-73 win over the Acadia Axemen Wednesday night. Huskies guard Shae Linton-Brown was named Subway Player of the Game with 23 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals and one block. Dontae Mitchell poured in a game-high 25 points, added five rebounds, four assists and a block in the win. The Axemen were led by senior guard Alex Muise who posted 20 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Friday night, the UNB Reds scored a 94-85 victory over the Cape Breton Capers in Sydney. Norm Burry led the Reds with 21 points, while adding 10 rebounds and five assists. Malik Grant, the Subway player of the game, finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists for UNB. Osman Omar led the Capers with a game-high 27 points while adding eight rebounds, three steals and one assist.
