AUS Men's Basketball Weekly Roundup: Week 9

Friday, February 5

UNB 107 at Saint Mary's 97 (Box Score)

The UNB Varsity Reds travelled to Halifax to face the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday night. The Varsity Reds took the lead after the first quarter, outscoring the Huskies 26-20. Saint Mary's fought back in the second, to top the Varsity Reds 27-21 in points, tying the game at 47-47 at the half. The third quarter saw back-and-forth play from both ends of the court, with the Varsity Reds just edging the Huskies 23-22 in points, to lead 70-69 heading into the final quarter. The fourth started with even scoring, until the Varsity Reds picked up the pace with just six minutes remaining in regulation to outscore the Huskies 37-28, earning the 107-97 victory. Javon Masters led the Varsity Reds with a massive game-high 43 points, while Brian Rouse led the Huskies with 31 points, adding 11 rebounds.

Cape Breton 73 at Acadia 76 (Box Score)

The Acadia Axemen hosted the Cape Breton Capers in Wolfville on Friday. After trailing 10-2 at the 06:16 mark of the first quarter, the Capers  pushed back to outscore the Axemen and hold a 17-13 lead heading into the second. The Axemen came out hot in the second quarter, topping the Capers 23-13 in points to hold a 36-30 lead at the half. The Capers pushed for the come-back in the third quarter, outscoring the Axemen 20-17 to put them within three. The final quarter saw the Capers battle hard, taking a 70-61 lead with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. The Axemen battled back, taking a 74-73 lead from two successful free throws from Shaquille Smith with just 30 seconds remaining. After two successful free throws from Acadia's Erik Nissen with no time left on the board, the Axemen earned the 76-73 victory. Cedric Kasongo led the Capers in points with 18, adding seven rebounds, while Kyle Arseneault led the Axemen with a game-high 25 points, adding six rebounds.

UPEI 85 at StFX 88 (Box Score)

The UPEI Panthers travelled to Antigonish on Friday to face the StFX X-Men. The Panthers came out strong in the first quarter, going on a 9-0 run to hold a 22-10 lead heading into the second frame. The X-Men battled back in the second, outscoring the Panthers 22-16 to cut UPEI's lead to 38-32 at the half. The X-Men continued their come-back throughout the third quarter, topping the Panthers 30-20 in points to take a 62-58 lead with just the final 10 minutes of regulation remaining. The Panthers battled for the come-back in the fourth, just edging the X-Men 27-26 in points, allowing StFX to hold on for the 88-85 victory at home. Tyler Scott led the Panthers in points with 24, adding three rebounds and four assists, while Julius Antoine led the X-Men with 24 points, adding 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Saturday, February 6

UPEI 90 at StFX 96 (Box Score)

The StFX X-Men hosted the UPEI Panthers on Saturday for their second meeting of the weekend. After a back-and-forth first quarter, the X-Men held a 25-21 lead after the Panthers. The Panthers battled back in the second frame to outscore the X-Men 24-19 to take a 45-44 lead at the half. The X-Men battled back in the third quarter, holding a 63-51 lead just four minutes in, until the Panthers bounced back to top the X-Men 31-26 in points to hold a 76-70 edge heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation. The X-Men battled for the come-back in the fourth, outscoring the Panthers 26-14 to earn the 96-90 victory at home. 

Tyler Scott led the Panthers with 31 points, adding seven rebounds and six assists, while Kevin Bercy led the X-Men with a game-high 33 points, adding 13 rebounds and one assist.

Dalhousie 83 at Memorial 78 (Box Score)

The Dalhousie Tigers travelled to St. John's this weekend to take on the Memorial Sea-Hawks. The Tigers came out strong in the first quarter, outscoring the Sea-Hawks 29-17. The second quarter saw back-and-forth scoring from both ends of the court with the Sea-Hawks edging the Tigers 21-20 in points to cut the Tigers lead to 49-38 at the half. The Sea-Hawks looked for the come-back in the third, outscoring the Tigers 24-20 to cut the Tigers lead to seven with just 10 minutes remaining. The Sea-Hawks continued their come-back throughout the fourth, topping the Tigers 16-14 in points, however it was not enough as Dalhousie held on for the 83-78 victory. Ritchie Kanza Mata led the Tigers in points with 23 points, adding 11 rebounds, eight assists, and two steals, while Vasilije Curcic led with Sea-Hawks with 23 points, adding two rebounds and three assists.

Cape Breton 79 at Acadia 87 (OT) (Box Score)

The Acadia Axemen hosted the Cape Breton Capers in Wolfville for the second time this weekend on Saturday. The Capers held the lead throughout the first quarter, outscoring the Axemen 18-14. The Capers extended their lead throughout the second, holding a 44-32 lead at the half. The Capers struggled to get on the board in the third, allowing the Axemen to capitalize and top Cape Breton 23-3 in points to take a 55-47 lead with just the final 10 minutes remaining. The Capers came back strong in the fourth, tying the game at 71-71 with just three seconds remaining in regulation with a layup from Meshack Lufile, sending the game to over-time. The Axemen held the lead throughout the extra frame, topping to Capers 16-8 in points to earn the 87-79 victory in over-time. Cedric Kasongo led the Capers in points with 17, adding seven rebounds and three assists, while Kyle Arseneault led the Axemen with a game-high 24 points, adding two rebounds and two assists.

In their second meeting of the weekend, the Saint Mary's Huskies topped the UNB Varsity Reds 86-77. The first quarter saw even scoring with both squads putting up 18 points each. The Huskies took the lead after the second quarter, topping the Varsity Reds 19-15 in points to hold a 37-33 edge at the half. The Huskies extended their lead throughout the third quarter, outscoring the Varsity Reds 26-21 to hold a 63-54 lead heading into the final frame. The fourth quarter saw even scoring from both squads, with both teams putting up 23 points allowing the Huskies to hold on for the 86-77 victory. Javon Masters led the Varsity Reds with a game-high 32 points, adding five rebounds and two assists, while Brian Rouse led the Huskies with 26 points, adding five rebounds and two assists.

Dalhousie 65 at Memorial 73 (Box Score)

The Memorial Sea-Hawks hosted the Dalhousie Tigers for their second meeting of the weekend on Sunday. After trailing throughout the first half of the opening quarter, the Sea-Hawks took charge in the last four minutes of the opening frame, outscoring the Tigers 21-14 in points. In the second quarter, the Tigers came out strong, topping the Sea-Hawks 18-9 in points, passing Memorial to hold a 32-30 edge at the half. The Sea-Hawks looked to regain their lead in the second half, posting 20 points in the third quarter compared to the Tigers 12, allowing Memorial to hold a 50-44 lead with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The Sea-Hawks held their lead in the fourth, edging the the Tigers 23-21 in points, to hold on for the 73-65 victory at home. Sven Stammberger led the Tigers in points with 15, adding eight rebounds and three assists, while Vasilije Curcic led the Sea-Hawks with a game-high 16 points, adding eight rebounds and one assist.
