AUS Men's Basketball Weekly Roundup: Week 8

StFX 86 at Cape Breton 100 (Box Score)

The Cape Breton Capers hosted the StFX X-Men in Sydney on Tuesday night. The first quarter saw tight play from both sides of the court, with the Capers outscoring the X-Men 21-20. Back-and-forth scoring throughout the second frame saw both squads putting up 26 points, allowing the Capers to hold a 47-46 edge at the half. The Capers came out strong in the third quarter, holding the lead throughout, to outscore the X-Men 30-23, taking a 77-69 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation. The Capers extended their lead throughout the fourth, outscoring the X-Men 23-17 to earn the 100-86 victory at home. Kevin Bercy led the X-Men with 22 points, adding eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Meshack Lufile led the Capers with a game-high 32 points, adding 10 rebounds and three blocks.

StFX 69 at Saint Mary's 82 (4-Point Game) (Box Score)

The Saint Mary's Huskies hosted the StFX X-Men in the Varsity Showdown at the Scotiabank Centre on Saturday afternoon. The X-Men held the lead throughout the first quarter, outscoring the Huskies 17-13. The Huskies battled back in the second, outscoring the X-Men 22-15 to take a 35-32 lead at the half. The Huskies extended their lead throughout the second half, outscoring the X-Men 19-15 and 28-22 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to earn the 82-69 victory at home. Cameron Walker led the X-Men with a game-high 23 points, adding five points, while Brian Rouse led the Huskies with 22 points, adding six rebounds and three assists.

Memorial 90 at UNB 108 (Box Score)

The Memorial Sea-Hawks travelled to Fredericton on Saturday to face the UNB Varsity Reds. The Varsity Reds came out strong in the first, outscoring the Sea-Hawks 24-16. The Sea-Hawks battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the Varsity Reds 24-22 to cut UNB's lead to 46-40 at the half. The Varsity Reds came out flying in the third quarter, putting 36 points on the board compared to Memorial's 19, to take a 82-59 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation. The Sea-Hawks looked for the come-back in the final frame, outscoring the Varsity Reds 31-26, but it would not be enough as UNB held on for the 108-90 victory. Vasilije Curcic led the Sea-Hawks with 30 points, adding 10 rebounds and four assists, while Javon Masters led the Varsity Reds with a game-high 34 points, adding four rebounds and three assists.

Acadia 68 at Dalhousie 87 (4-Point Game) (Box Score)

The Dalhousie Tigers hosted the Acadia Axemen in the Varsity Showdown at the Scotiabank Centre on Saturday night. The first quarter started with back-and-forth play, until the Tigers took the lead, outscoring the Axemen 21-16 in the frame. The Tigers extended their lead throughout the second, topping the Axemen in points 15-11, to hold a 36-27 edge at the half. The Tigers continued strong throughout the second half, outscoring the Axemen 25-21 and 26-20 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to hold on for the 87-68 victory. Shaquille Smith led the Axemen in points with 18, adding four rebounds and two assists, while Ritchie Kanza Mata led the Tigers with a game-high 23 points, adding three rebounds and seven assists.

The UPEI Panthers travelled to Sydney on Saturday night to take on the Cape Breton Capers. The Capers took the lead early into the first quarter, and held on to have a 20-13 edge over the Panthers heading into the second frame. The Capers extended their lead throughout the second, outscoring the Panthers 20-18 to hold a 40-31 lead at the half. Cape Breton came out strong in the third, extending their lead to 64-46 as they outscored UPEI 24-15. In the final quarter, the Panthers battled back, topping the Capers in points 17-13, but it would not be enough as Cape Breton held on for the 77-63 win at home. Tyler Scott led the Panthers with 16 points, adding three rebounds and one assist, while Kenny Jean-Louis led the Capers with a game-high 21 points, adding eight rebounds and three assists.

The UNB Varsity Reds hosted the Memorial Sea-Hawks for their second meeting of the weekend on Sunday. The Varsity Reds came out flying in the first quarter, outscoring the Sea-Hawks 29-12. The Sea-Hawks battled back in the second quarter, but were edged 29-28 in points by the Varsity Reds, putting UNB ahead 58-40 at the half. The Varsity Reds extended their lead in the second half, outscoring the Sea-Hawks 29-19 and 23-20 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to hold on for the 110-79 victory. Vasilije Curcic led the Sea-Hawks in points with 21, adding nine rebounds and three assists, while Javon Masters led the Varsity Reds with a game-high 35 points adding eight rebounds and two assists.

UPEI 97 at Cape Breton 80 (Box Score)

The Cape Breton Capers hosted the UPEI Panthers in Sydney on Sunday. The Panthers came out strong in the first quarter, outscoring the Capers 22-14, and extended their lead throughout the second frame, outscoring the Capers 21-20 to hold a 43-34 lead at the half. UPEI stayed hot throughout the second half, outscoring Cape Breton 28-21 and 26-25 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to earn the 97-80 win at home. Bradley States led the Panthers in points with a game-high 29, adding six rebounds and four assists, while Kenny Jean-Louis led the Capers with 20 points, adding six rebounds and three assists.
