Huskies down Axemen 89-75

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Acadia Axemen 89-75 in AUS men's basketball action Tuesday evening at the Homburg Centre.

Sharp three-point shooting early on in the first quarter saw Acadia build a five-point lead after 10 minutes, 24-19.

Saint Mary's used an 8-4 run to trim the Acadia lead to one, 28-27 halfway thru the second quarter. But Sean Stoqua's three-pointer then extended Acadia's lead to four, 31-27.

Acadia doubled up their lead to eight points to close out the half 45-37.

Scoring 31 third quarter points saw the Huskies take the lead for good 54-53 on a Achuil Lual basket.

The Huskies held a six-point lead after thirty minutes.

Saint Mary's outscored Acadia 21-11 in the fourth quarter for the 89-75 win.

Kyle Arsenault, Rhys Larry and Stoqua each had 14 points for the Axemen, who drop to 3-6 in conference play.

Laul poured in 24 points pacing all scorers and added 17 rebounds in the Huskies win. Brian Rouse added 22 points and three assists while Osman Barrie chipped in 20 points and 17 rebounds as well.

Also scoring for the Huskies, who improve to 5-4 in AUS play, were Jeremy McAvoy with nine points, Ryan Augustine and Kemar Alleyne each had four points while Marquis Clayton added four points.

Over the weekend Saint Mary's  split two road games versus UNB, winning 95-92 in overtime Friday night and losing 107-76 Saturday evening.

Saint Mary's visits Acadia next Wednesday. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
