AUS Football Players of the Week: Davidson, Kelly and McMinns honoured

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Running back Cameron Davidson, defensive back Rory Kelly and returner Eugene McMinns, all from the Acadia Axemen, have been selected as the AUS football players of the week for their respective performances in the Subway AUS Loney Bowl.

Acadia Axemen running back Cameron Davidson is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week.

A fourth-year kinesiology student in his third year of eligibility from Kentville, N.S., Davidson was named championship MVP of the 2017 AUS Loney Bowl Tuesday in Wolfville, N.S.

He had 22 carries for 152 yards in Acadia's 45-38 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in double overtime.

He also had a reception for six yards.

Rory Kelly of the Acadia Axemen has been named the AUS football defensive player of the week.

A second year defensive back from Moncton, N.B., Kelly had two key interceptions in Acadia's 45-37 over Saint Mary's Tuesday to capture the 2017 AUS football title.

He had a 33-yard interception return in the first quarter, followed by a three-yard interception return in double overtime to win the game.

Kelly's stats on defence for the Axemen also included 0.5 sacks, two solo and two assisted tackles, and a pass break up.

Acadia Axemen returner Eugene McMinns is the AUS football special teams player of the week.

A third-year community development student in his second year of eligibility from Nassau, Bahamas, McMinns made several keys plays on both special teams and offence for the Axemen in the 45-38 win over Saint Mary's in the Subway AUS Loney Bowl Tuesday in Wolfville, N.S.

On special teams, he had six kickoff returns for 148 yards and three punt returns for 66 yards.

On offence, he had six receptions for 114 yards and a receiving touchdown, as well as two carries for 17 yards.

With the win, the Axemen advance to host the Western Mustangs this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the U SPORTS Uteck Bowl.
