Week 2 AUS football players of the week: Blanchard, Pesek and Lambert honoured

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Wide receiver Josh Blanchard and kicker/punter Ryan Lambert of the Mount Allison Mounties and defensive lineman Martin Pesek of the Acadia Axemen have been selected as the Week 2 AUS football players of the week for their performances this past weekend.

Offensive Player of the Week

Name: Josh Blanchard
University: Mount Allison University
Position: Wide receiver
Hometown: Waaisis, N.B.
Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: BA sociology
Height and weight: 5'11", 180lbs

Wide receiver Josh Blanchard of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending Sept. 14, 2014.

Blanchard, a 5-foot-11, fourth-year sociology student in his fifth year of eligibility, had 13 receptions for 222 total yards in Saturday's 27-25 come-from-behind win over the StFX X-Men. These included three touchdown receptions, two of which occurred in the final two minutes of the game to give the Mounties the victory.

With Saturday's performance, the Waaisis, N.B. native claims the Mount Allison record for the most receiving yards in one game, good for sixth place in the AUS record books. His 13 receptions are tied for the third most in a single game in AUS history.

Blanchard also posted stats on special teams, including a kickoff return for 36 yards and a punt return for 29 yards for 287 all-purpose yards.

Defensive lineman Martin Pesek of the Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport football defensive player of the week.

A fifth-year bachelor of recreation management student in his fourth year of eligibility, Pesek posted two sacks in the Axemen's 16-13 victory over Saint Mary's Saturday in Wolfville.

The Toronto native's stats also included 6.0 tackles (four solo and four assisted), including 2.5 tackles for a total loss of 18 yards. Pesek, a seventh-round draft pick by the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats earlier this year, also recorded a forced fumble in the win.

Hometown: Grimsby, Ont.
Year of eligibility: First
Academic program: BA environmental studies
Height and weight: 5'9", 170lbs

Kicker and punter Ryan Lambert of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport football special teams player of the week.

A first-year environmental studies student from Grimsby, Ont., Lambert was 2-for-2 in field goals in Saturday's 27-25 win over the StFX X-Men.

He also was 3-for-3 on extra-point kicks, posting nine total points in the game, and recorded four kickoffs for 222 yards, averaging 55.5 yards per kickoff. Lambert's onside kick in the final minutes also paved the way for Mount Allison's game-winning touchdown with less than a minute left in the game.
