2014 AUS Football Team Preview: Mount Allison Mounties

2013 regular season record: 4-4
2013 regular season standings: 2nd AUS
2013 playoff record: 2-1
2013 playoff finish: Defeated Acadia 19-10 in AUS semifinal, defeated Saint Mary's 20-17 in AUS final, lost in Uteck Bowl to Laval 48-21

General Write-Up:

The 2013 Mount Allison Mounties overcame a slow start by finishing the regular season with three straight wins to claim second place in the AUS standings.

The Mounties continued their hot streak by winning back-to-back playoff games and capturing their first AUS football banner since the 1997 season and the right to host the CIS Uteck Bowl in Sackville, N.B. for the first time in school history.

Last season also marked the third time in the past four years the Mounties have earned an AUS playoff berth. Mount Allison's road win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in the was the first time a host team has lost the conference final at home since the AUS moved to a three-team playoff format.

In 2014 the Mounties look to capitalize on a large group of returning starters to go with key additions on both sides of the ball.

The Mounties lose AUS most outstanding player and Hec Crighton Trophy nominee Jordan Botel but feature a veteran heavy roster in Botel's absence.

All 12 defensive starters return to go along with 10 of 12 starters on offense. With a veteran presence, the Mounties will look to start fast in 2014 in defense of its AUS title.

Quote from head coach Kelly Jeffrey:

"We are fortunate to have a large group of starters back. We lose an excellent back in Botel but we have a lot of experience coming back to offset the loss."

"Our focus is to improve on playing better early in the season. We have all of the tools to play well early in the season with a veteran defense, strong kicking game and returning QB."
