Schedule and teams announced for the 2017 Subway AUS Curling Championships

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The 2017 Subway AUS curling championships get underway tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 9, and are being hosted by Atlantic University Sport and Curling Canada at the Truro Curling Club in Truro, N.S.

There will be a total of 14 teams participating in this year's event, which includes seven women’s teams and seven men's teams. This marks the third year that Atlantic University Sport has sanctioned a championship in the sport of curling.

The inaugural AUS curling championship was hosted by UPEI in 2014 and saw 10 squads participate (five men's and five women's teams) while last year's event hosted by StFX attracted 14 teams (eight women's and six men's teams)

The teams will compete in a round robin schedule with both the women’s and men's semifinals scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by the finals which take place at 1 p.m. (all times AST).

“We are excited to once again be working with Curling Canada to showcase university curling in Atlantic Canada,” says Phil Currie, executive director of Atlantic University Sport. “To have 14 teams representing their institutions and competing for the honour of claiming an AUS banner is a testament to the continued interest and growth in popularity of the sport."

The inaugural championship in 2014 saw the Saint Mary's women's team and the University of New Brunswick men's squad claim the first ever AUS banners awarded in this sport. Last year, the Dalhousie men's and women's teams swept both titles.

On the men’s side, this year’s lineup includes Acadia University, Dalhousie University, Memorial University, StFX University, Saint Mary's University, the University of New Brunswick, and the University of Prince Edward Island.

The women’s field includes Dalhousie, Memorial, Mount Allison, Saint Mary's, StFX, UNB and UPEI.
