2017 Subway AUS Curling Championships: Day 1 Recap

(TRURO, N.S.) - The 2017 Subway AUS Curling Championships got underway Thursday at the Truro Curling Club in Truro, N.S.

Seven women’s teams and seven men’s teams from across Atlantic Canada will be competing throughout the weekend for their respective AUS banners.

The first draw of the championship started at 11:30AM with five games.

On the men’s side, the UNB Varsity Reds, skipped by Alex Robichaud, ended Day 1 at the top of the standings with a 2-0 record. Robichaud and his V-Reds squad defeated Saint Mary’s by a score of 11-1 in the morning draw and returned in the afternoon to defeat Acadia by an identical score of 11-1.

UPEI, Dalhousie and Memorial each finished the opening Day undefeated with 1-0 records, while Saint Mary’s (0-1), Acadia (0-2) and StFX (0-2) will be looking for their first wins of the championship when play resumes Friday.

The opening draw also featured a pair of women’s match-ups as the UNB Varsity Reds defeated the UPEI Panthers 8-3 and the StFX X-Women prevailed over the Dalhousie Tigers by a score of 7-4.

The afternoon draw included three more women’s games, including the squads from Saint Mary’s, Memorial and Mount Allison seeing their first action.

The UPEI women, led by skip Sabrina Smith, clawed back from a 6-1 deficit through five ends and scored six unanswered points, including a steal in the final end against SMU to win by a 7-6 margin.

The StFX X-Women also posted an impressive comeback in their afternoon match with Mount Allison where they trailed 7-0 after three ends. The X-Women, skipped by Emma Logan, tied the score at 7-7 with a steal in the seventh end and went on to steal three more in the eighth end to register a 10-7 victory.

In the third women’s match-up of the afternoon draw, the Dalhousie Tigers evened their record at 1-1 with an 11-2 win over Memorial.

The 2017 Subway AUS curling championship resumes Friday morning at 9:00am with five games.
