Huskies and Varsity Reds claim 2015 Subway AUS Curling Banners

(MONTAGUE, PEI) - The 2015 Subway AUS Curling Championships came to a close Sunday with the Saint Mary’s Huskies women and UNB Varsity Reds claiming their respective banners at the Montague Curling Club in Montague, P.E.I.

In the women’s final, the Huskies faced the host UPEI Panthers who had defeated the StFX X-Women by a score of 7-2 in semifinal play earlier in the day to advance to the final.

Saint Mary’s, skipped by Sara Spafford, jumped out to an early lead and held a 4-1 advantage at the fifth end break. Veronica Smith and her UPEI squad rebounded with a deuce in the sixth end and added a steal of one in the seventh to even the score at 4-4 with three ends to play.

Spafford and the Huskies managed to grab two points with the hammer in the eighth end and after exchanging singles in the final two ends, went on to post a 7-5 win and claim the 2015 Subway AUS women’s curling title.

In the men’s final, UNB and skip Josh Barry faced the Saint Mary’s team skipped by Scott Babin.

The Varsity Reds finished the round robin schedule with a perfect 3-0 record to advance directly to the final, while the Huskies won their way into the championship game by virtue of a 9-6 win over the Dalhousie Tigers in Sunday’s semifinal.

In the final, the Varsity Reds led 5-1 after the third end thanks to a four-point end, but the Huskies responded in the fourth with a three-point end followed by a steal in the fifth to even the score at 5-5 at the break.

UNB was held to a single point with the hammer in the sixth, but went on to steal a point in the seventh followed by a steal of two in the eighth to put the contest out of reach and post a final score of 9-5.
