Saint Mary's takes two vs Memorial

Saint Mary's takes two vs Memorial

The Saint Mary's Huskies topped the Memorial Sea-Hawks 69-53 on Saturday afternoon from The Field House.

After an unfortunate loss the previous evening, the Sea-Hawks came out stronger to start their second game of the weekend series against Saint Mary's. It was the final game for a few Hawks; Daniel Gordon, Davion Parnisalu, who have been major players for the Hawks this season, as well as Jovan Babovic, who will be graduating this year and not returning.

Starting the game, the seniors led the charge on the offensive end, with Jovan putting up four, Dan and Davion, putting up six points each. It was a confident start to the game, as Parnsalu ended the quarter on a buzzer-beater three.

With such a confident start to the game, the second quarter was certainly frustrating for Memorial, being outscored 15-4. The Hawks were lucky that SMU was having a harder time making there shots today, shooting under 30% from the field and a dismal percentage from downtown at just 13%.

After the break, the third quarter was more of the same. Memorial was struggling to trim the Huskie' lead. The second quarter run from SMU was the demoralizing factor in the game, as Memorial could not overcome the momentum swing. SMU had four of their five starters in double figures, two of them also posting double-double' (Nikita Kasongo, Brent Martindale).

In their final home game, Daniel Gordon and Davion Parnisalu ended their Sea-Hawks careers with solid contributions; Gordon had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Parnisalu had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The Sea-Hawks finish the season with a 5-15, but were able to secure the final spot in the AUS Championships next weekend in Halifax.  The games will be available on AUStv.ca
