Huskies fall to Panthers in Home Opener

(Halifax, NS)--The UPEI Panthers upended the Saint Mary's Huskies 89-79 Sunday evening in AUS men's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

 

The Panthers held a 21-20 lead after the opening quarter, which saw Tyler Scott (Halifax) drop 11 points for UPEI, while SMU's Theon Reefer (Toronto) also had 11 in the frame.

 

UPEI continued their lead in the second quarter, out scoring SMU 20-18, good for a 41-38 halftime cushion.

 

The Panthers came out hot to start the third quarter, shooting 52.9% from the floor compared to 41.2% for SMU and built a 13 point lead after thirty minutes 69-56.

 

Both teams got to the foul-line in the fourth quarter as UPEI went 10-12 from the charity stripe while Saint Mary's was 12-15.

 

The Huskies out scored the Panthers 23-20 in the final frame yet UPEI held on for the 89-79 victory.

 

Scott finished with 26 points (8-17 FG) and seven rebounds for UPEI, who improve to 3-0 and host 2-2 CBU November 20th.

 

Dut Dut (Ottawa) had 14 points while Bradley States (Bathurst, NB) and Lorenzo Parker (New Minas, NS) each had 12 points for the Panthers.

 

Reefer also finished with 26 points and hauled in nine rebounds on the night for the Huskies.

 

Brian Rouse (Mississauga, ON) added 20 points and nine boards for SMU while Marquis Clayton (Halifax) chipped in 17 points on 10 for 12 shooting from the foul-line.

 

Also scoring for the Huskies were Will Fiander (Halifax) with seven points, Achuil Lual (Ottawa) and Kadeem Thompson (Toronto) had four points each, while Kemar Alleyne (Scarborough, ON) had one point.

 

Saint Mary's falls to 0-3 and host 4-0 Dalhousie November 18th at 8 pm.
