(St. John's, NL) The Memorial Sea-Hawks women's basketball team secured their third straight victory with a convincing 70-57 victory over the StFX X-Women. The Sea-Hawks are now 3-0 on home court to begin the season.
Memorial started their two-game series against the St. FX X-Women following the same approach that earned them two solid wins against Dalhousie the previous weekend.
The Sea-Hawks were able to get to the free-throw line and convert a solid percentage of their attempts, going 14/17 (82.4%). The X-Women struggled against Memorial's defense, shooting 29% through the first half.
Brooklyn Wright has been a bright spot for the Sea-Hawks. Wright started the second quarter strong, scoring a quick 10 points on perfect shooting. Memorial was ahead through both quarters of the first half, 17-16 after the first, and 40-22 at the half.
The X-Women had a decent third quarter, improving their shooting from the field and from the three-point line, shooting 3/6 from deep and 8/17 from the field, an improvement from the first half. Unfortunately for X, Memorial was able to keep up the pressure and continue their success on the offensive end. The Sea-Hawks may have struggled from the field, but their excellent free-throw shooting allowed them sustain their lead, finishing the game shooting 20/24 from the line.
Brooklyn Wright excelled in this game, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Wright earned herself Subway Player-of-the-Game commendations.
Memorial led through the final two quarters, 54-41 after the third, and 70-57 as the final score.
