The Sea-Hawks and the Varsity Reds had last met during AUS tournament action in Moncton were the Sea-Hawks took the match by a score of 3-1.
The Sea-Hawks got off to a flying start leading by as many as 10 points in the start of the first set (15-5). However the Sea-Hawks suffered from miscommunication during that first set and saw their lead shortened to 2 points towards the end of the first set (21-19). The Sea-Hawks were able to regain their composure and closed the set out by a score of 25-22.
The second set got underway in a very similar fashion, with the Sea-Hawks taking an early lead, which they were able to hold on to throughout the set. The Varsity Reds offered little opposition throughout the second set as the Sea-Hawks cruised to a comfortable 25-13 win to take the second set.
The Varsity Reds took their first lead of the game during the third set and never looked back. They exhausted their options to remain in contention for the game. The Varsity Reds lead by as many as 10 points (16-10), but ended up winning by a margin of 5 points with a score of 25-20.
The fourth set was a tightly contested affair with a tie at the midpoint of the set with a score of 14-14. The Varsity Reds garnered a strong offensive effort and took the set with a score of 28-26.
Memorial came out strong to start the 5th set and jumped out to an early 10-1 lead. UNB would do their best to close the gap, cutting the Sea-Hawks lead to 13-8, but the Sea-Hawks would take the 5th and final set 15-9.
Kier Fey was named the Subway Player of the Game, finishing with 24 kills, 19 digs, and 26.5 points.
Alison Poynter had a game-high 45 assists, while also registering 4 aces and 11 digs.
Maggie McLenahan, who finished with a game-high 36 digs, led the Varsity Reds. UNB's Julia Diemert had a team-high 19 points, while dropping in 5 aces in the loss.
The Sea-Hawks and Varsity Reds will be squaring off twice more this weekend, with games scheduled for Saturday at 7pm NST and Sunday at 1pm NST. Online coverage of the games is offered through AUStv.ca.
