Capers Down Hawks on Home Court

The Memorial Sea-Hawks were defeated 64-50 at the hands of the Cape Breton Capers on Sunday afternoon at The Field House. The Ladies team came out of the gates slower than usual in their first game back from winter break. CBU came ready to play, playing strong zone defense, preventing a Memorial team that enjoys attacking the basket from getting easy layups. CBU held the lead through the first half, 18-11 after the first, 28-21 at half.

Memorial has had an incredibly difficult half converting from the field, shooting a dismal 19% from the field, even worse from behind the arc at 13%. CBU hasn't shot the ball well by any means, but they managed to achieve a better percentage from the field than the Hawks at 36%.

Scoring has been balanced across both teams, with no players scoring more than 10, but having multiple players contributing.

The second half was tough for Memorial, especially the third quarter. The Hawks were outscored 21-10, continuing their struggles from the field, as well as allowing inside buckets on defense. Even with a strong run in the fourth to cut the lead down to single digits, Memorial could not contain Cape Breton' post work; Hannah Brown of the Capers put on a clinic down-low, putting up 21 points and a whopping 17 rebounds.

For Memorial, Hallie Nickerson put up 12 off the bench, which made her the top scorer. After this loss, the Hawks will look to get back on track to split the weekend series with a win tomorrow. The Hawks currently stand 5-4 on the season; CBU stands 5-3. The game will be available on AUStv.ca.
