Moncton squeezes out 3-1 win over Axewomen

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Four close scoring sets resulted in a 3-1 match win for the visiting Moncton Aigles Bleus over the Acadia Axewomen.

Holding onto an early lead in the opening set, the Axewomen trailed Moncton for the mostpart of the game until an attack error at 20-20 game Acadia space to squeeze in two kills by Lauryn Renzella (Stouffville, Ont.) to gain an Axewomen 22-21 advantage. Renzella's kill closed the set 25-22 Acadia.

Down 11-9 in the second set, Acadia kills by Renzella, Fiona McGuinty (Ottawa, Ont.) and Renzella again, tied the match at 11. Defensive errors followed as the Axewomen slipped  behind 18-13. But the Axewomen would not give up, battling back to tie the game at 19.

Timely kills by Moncton's Rachelle Lemoine (St. Boniface, Man.) and Alyssa Turenne (Steinbach, Man.) pushed the score to 24-23 Moncton. A bad set and a ball handling error by the Axewomen concluded the second set at 26-24 Moncton.

Behind in the opening minutes of the third, Acadia once again battled back but could not gain ground on a deficit that grew to 17-8 and an eventual 25-17 Moncton win.
A close fourth and eventual final game saw a see-saw battle that opened up after a 14-14 tie. Moncton pushed to a 17-14 lead on two service aces and an attack error and maintained the lead for the eventual 25-20 set win and 3-1 match victory.

Acadia's Subway Player of the Game, second year outside hitter Lauryn Renzella, posted a game high 18 kills and an amazing hitting percentage of 0.447. Moncton's Christelle Bertin (Beresford, N.B.) landed 10 kills.

Moncton improves to 5-3 and will host the first place and undefeated Dalhousie Tigers next weekend, while the Axewomen head to UNB and Moncton next Friday and Saturday nights with a 2-6 record.
