Huskies win two at home vs Memorial

(Halifax, NS)--Dartmouth's Rachelle Coward's 14 points led all scorers Friday night in Saint Mary's 76-51 victory over the Memorial Sea Hawks in AUS women's basketball action.

Coward had nine second-half points and shot 4 for 9 from three-point land.

Memorial held a slim 16-14 lead after 10 minutes when Saint Mary's used a 25-5 run and took a 39-21 half lead.

A 23-14 third quarter saw SMU increase their cushion 62-35 after thirty minutes.

Memorial outscored SMU 16-14 in the final frame and SMU went on to win 76-51.

Sydney Ezekiel (St. John's, NL) came off the bench and paced the Sea Hawks with 11 points in 20 minutes.

Lindsay Taylor (Waterloo, ON) added 10 points on 3 for 5 three-point shooting.

Memorial falls to 1-10 and has four points on the year.

Also scoring for the Huskies were Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, QC) had 12 points, Jenny Lewis (Fall River, NS) 11 and Laura Langille (Bedford, NS) and Shanieka Wood (Ajax, ON) each had 10 points.

SMU won two road games last week, 65-56 over Dal (Jan. 6th) and 67-52 against UPEI (Jan. 9th).

Saint Mary's improves to 8-1 (20 pts) and sits six points behind first-place 10-0 Acadia and is four points up third-place 6-4 Cape Breton.

In game two on Saturday, Shanieka Wood's 18 points and 15 rebounds was too much for the Memorial Sea-Hawks in AUS women's basketball action.

The Ajax, Ontario native helped her Huskies improve to 9-1 in AUS play and have 22 points thru ten games.

SMU jumped out to a 20-12 opening quarter lead, doubled up Memorial 14-7 in the second and ended the half 34-19.

An 18-12 third quarter put SMU in front 52-31 after thirty minutes.

The Sea-Hawks outscored the Huskies 20-19 in the final frame and SMU held on for the 71-51 victory.

Memorial's Sydney Stewart (Sarina, ON) led all scorers with 22 points while teammate Lindsay Taylor (Waterloo, ON) added 11 in the loss.

The Sea-Hawks drop to 1-11 and have four points in the standings.

Fourth-year guard Jenny Lewis (Fall River, NS) continued her hot touch for SMU, scoring 14 points off the bench.

Montreal native Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse chipped in 12 points for the Huskies, while teammates Laura Langille (Bedford, NS) and Katrina Murrell (Markham, ON) each had seven.

SMU's Rachelle Coward (Dartmouth, NS) had a quiet afternoon with six points, Angelina Carvery (Halifax, NS) five and Espoo, Finland native Emma Valikoski finished with two points.

SMU hits the road January 22nd at 6pm versus Dalhousie.
