Huskies drop Seahawks 86-78

(St. John's, NL) The Sea-Hawks men's basketball team welcomed the Saint Mary's Huskies to town for a two game series this weekend, but the first game had to be postponed due to a power outage. Sunday's matchup saw the Hawks take a tough loss in their home opener 86-78.

The Hawks fought hard in the closing minutes, but were unable to come away with a win against a gritty Saint Mary's squad.

The Huskies had a well-rounded scoring afternoon, led by 2nd year guard Johneil Johnson, who scored 15 points. Nico Brauner, Brent Martindale, Nikita Kasongo and Kemar Alleyne all scored in double figures as well to lead the huskies to victory.

Nathan Barker was the top scorer for the Sea-Hawks, scoring 31 points on 13-20 shooting. Daniel Foo and Jason Thompson also played well, with Foo dropping 17 points and 4 rebounds and Thompson scoring 12 points and dishing out 6 assists in the loss.

The story of this game was the multiple changes in momentum, and the three-point shot. The Huskies were able to take advantage of the runs they went on, and were able to cut the Sea-Hawks' runs short.

Saint Mary's also hit 9 threes, compared to Memorial only hitting 2 three-pointers. The Hawks also only shot 42% from the field, while they allowed the Huskies to shoot 48% from the field.

This loss drops the Sea-Hawks to 0-3. Memorial will try to have a quick turnaround and will look to rebound next weekend when the Acadia Axemen come to town.

Saint Mary's travel to PEI for a pair of games on November 16th.
