Axewomen sweep weekend match-up against visiting Sea-Hawks

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Down by as much as much as 16 in the second quarter, the Axewomen basketball posted a comeback 83-72 win over Memorial in the second of two games against the Sea-Hawks this weekend.

The Axewomen tied the game up at 39-39 at 6:43 in the third quarter on two made Chanel Smith free throws and did so again at 49 on an Alyson Fulton layup. A see-saw battle ended on a Paloma Anderson layup that broke the last tie at 53 early in the final frame.

A 10-0 run in the opening of the third quarter contributed to the Axewomen's comeback. Eleven of the Sea-Hawks 19 turnovers came in the opening quarter of the second half.

With 3:39 remaining in the final quarter, Acadia pushed out to their largest lead of 13 points, giving the Axewomen the eventual win.

Paloma Anderson netted 20 game points but had only six in the first half. Subway Player of the Game Chanel Smith, who scored a game-high 27 points had 19 of her points in the second half to help in the comeback win.

Off the bench, Allie Berry had 14 points that included a team high 11 rebounds.

Sea-Hawk Sydney Stewart scored a team high 16 points and Brooklynn Wright added 10. Graciela Diaz-Brito posted a game high 12 rebounds of which 11 were defensive boards.

Both teams were dead-even at 38.5% from the floor.

The win gives the Axewomen a regular season ending 11-9 record and fourth place in the AUS standings, while the Sea-Hawks lose to in a row to Acadia and drop to 11-9 and sixth in the final standings.

Both teams will prepare for quarterfinal play this coming weekend at the AUS women's basketball championship host at the Scotiabank Center in Halifax, N.S.
