CIS No.4 SMU beats CBU 70-51 in women’s basketball, take over first place

(Halifax, NS)—The CIS No. 4 SMU Huskies defeated the CBU Capers 70-51 Saturday evening in AUS women's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

The 15-1 Huskies take over first-place in AUS play with 40 points, jumping idle 15-2 Acadia by two with a game in hand.

CBU's Alison Keough (Marion Bridge, NS) paced all scorers with a double-double on 19 points and 16 rebounds.

Jalynn Skeir (Halifax, NS) had eight points off the Caper bench.

CBU drops to 11-6 with 28 points, good for third-place in conference play.

Saint Mary's took a 20-7 opening quarter lead before using a 20-13 second quarter run to cushion their 40-20 halftime lead.

CBU outscored SMU 15-7 in the third quarter and the Huskies had a 47-35 lead after thirty minutes.

A 23-16 SMU fourth quarter score saw the Huskies win 70-51.

Rachelle Coward (Dartmouth, NS) scored 15 points for SMU while teammates Jenny Lewis (Fall River, NS) had 12 points off the bench and Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, QC) had 11 and four steals.

Shanieka Wood (Ajax, ON) finished with a double-double for SMU, 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Saint Mary's hosts 6-11 Dalhousie Wednesday evening while CBU travels to 3-13 StFX February 20th.

Tip-off for both games is at 6 pm.
