In AUS women's basketball action at the Dalplex, the Cape Breton Capers defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 61-48 in a game where the Capers successfully navigated ebbs and flows in scoring to get the win.
In the first quarter, the scoring was slow to get things started, with it only being 8-2 for the Capers after the first five minutes. The baskets did pick up in the latter five minutes, with Cape Breton beginning work on building a lead. That lead ending up being 15-6 after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw play even out a little bit as both teams established their offensive presences. The Capers were able to keep their defence steady, despite the increase in the Tigers' scoring as they tried to chip into the lead. The two teams ended up tying the second quarter 14-14, which gave the Capers a 29-20 lead at halftime.
As the third quarter was in progress, the point scoring entered into another dry spell, with neither team able to get much going on offence. The Capers were able to maintain their lead, but the Tigers never let the game get too out of reach. This resulted in the score being 41-30 for Cape Breton after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers started to make a dent into the lead. This made the possibility of a comeback seem more likely for Dalhousie in the first few minutes of the quarter. However, the Capers clamped down and used the lead they already had to seal the victory.
The Capers were led by Subway Player of the Game Hannah Brown (North Sydney, NS), who had a team leading 15 points and 14 rebounds to get the double double. Alison Keough (Marion Bridge, NS) also had a double double with 14 points and 12 boards.
The Tigers were powered by Robertha Charles (Montreal, QC), who had a game high 16 points, and also chipped in seven rebounds. Karina May (Moncton, NB) added six points and six boards for the Tigers.
The Capers play next tomorrow at 6:00 pm against the Acadia Axemen in Wolfville, while the Tigers next game is this Thursday against the Axemen at 6 in Wolfville.
