Axewomen pickup important win vs. Sea-Hawks in the hope to clinch first place

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Acadia Axewomen improved to 13-3 with a one-sided 88-61 win over the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks in a rare 2:00 pm game on a Tuesday afternoon.

Samantha Russell (Dartmouth, N.S.) netted 24 points off the bench to be named the AUS Subway Player of the Game. Russell was 8 for 15 from the field, added four three-point shots, and pulled down seven rebounds.

Russell made up 24 of the 40 bench points from the Axewomen.

The Axewomen were 48.6% from the floor compared to the Sea-Hawks' 27% and Memorial wasn't much better from the distant arc with 22.2% made.

Acadia had its largest lead of 32 points with 2:01 on the clock in the second quarter.

With a 64-36 lead at the half, the Axewomen maintained the margin throughout the game, with the Sea-Hawks never closing the gap.

Sea-Hawk Ines Salat Margarit (Barcelona, ESP) posted a team-high 15 points and posted eight rebounds. Teammate Hannah Green (Flatrock, Nfld.) had  13 points and six rebounds.

Haley McDonald (Port Williams, N.S.), who tried to take over the lead in Acadia's career assists, fell short by two of breaking the record of 328 by Lindsay LaMorre (1997-01). McDonald posted 24 points in 20 minutes of play and added seven rebounds and five assists to her career totals.

Sarah Delorey (Elmsdale, N.S.) led the Axewomen with nine rebounds and recorded 12 points in the win.

Today's win was worth eight points in the standings due to the canceled first of two games against Memorial. The Axewomen have clinched the first-round bye and sit in first place in the AUS standings. They will look to pick up four more points in their remaining eight points - three games -  to clinch first place in the AUS standings.

The Sea-Hawks clinched a playoff berth last week and sit tied in fourth place with UNB at 26 points.

Acadia hosts StFX this Saturday and then travels to StFX next Tuesday evening, while the Sea-Hawks travel to Dalhousie this coming Saturday and Sunday.
