Huskies sweep weekend-series with 100-60 win over UPEI

(HALIFAX, N.S.)—The U Sports No. 5-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the visiting UPEI Panthers 100-60 on Saturday night in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

UPEI's Amin Suleman (Toronto, ON) paced all scorers on the night. The 5'11 fourth-year guard scored 21 points off the bench in the loss.

Saint Mary's jumped out to a fast start, shooting 57.9% from the floor in the first quarter and led 28-12 after 10 minutes. SMU had seven different scorers in the quarter and all 12 players dressed score at least four points in the game.

The Huskies continued their scoring streak and tough defence, outscoring UPEI 26-14 in the second quarter. Saint Mary's forced six turnovers in the quarter and the Panthers had 15 in the first-half. SMU led 54-26 at halftime.

Suleman scored 12 of his 21 points in the third quarter, shooting 4-6 from the three-point line in the frame. SMU outscored the Panthers 24-21 in the quarter and led 78-47 after 30 minutes.

SMU outscored UPEI 22-13 in the final frame.

Nevell Provo (North Preston, NS) and Qyemah Gibson (Nassau, Bahamas) each led the Huskies with 14 points apiece off the bench. Provo was named Subway player of the game.

UPEI's Dakelle Brooks (East Preston, NS) had nine points and teammates Jamesley Jerome (Montreal, QC) and Milorad Sedlarevic (Jesenice, Slovenia) each chipped in eight points.

Kemar Alleyne (Scarborough, ON) added 13 points on 4 for 6 shooting from beyond the three-point arc for Saint Mary's and Johneil Johnson (Lake Echo, NS) had nine points in the win.

UPEI falls to 3-7 while Saint Mary's improves to 9-0 on the year.

Saint Mary's hosts the Dalhousie Tigers on Tuesday, January 15th and UPEI welcomes the Tigers January 20 at 3 p.m.
