Shanieka Wood’s double-double pushes CIS No. 4 SMU over UNB 68-61

(Halifax, NS)—The CIS No. 4SMU Huskies defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 68-61 Saturday evening in AUS women's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

Laura Kaye (Fredericton, NB) led UNB and all scorers with 21 points on the night and added seven rebounds in the loss.

Grace Wade (Moncton, NB) added 13 points for the Varsity Reds who drop to 9-7 and have 20 points in conference play.

SMU took the opening quarter 21-20 and Wade had eight of her 13 points in the frame for UNB.

The Huskies used a 14-12 second quarter score to take a slim 35-32 halftime lead.

Saint Mary's increased their lead to 51-47 after thirty minutes with a 16-15 third quarter score.

The final frame saw SMU outscore UNB 17-14 in the quarter and held off the Varsity Reds 68-61 for the win.

Rachelle Coward (Dartmouth, NS) paced SMU with 13 points and two assists and improves to 13-1 with 32 points on the season.

Shanieka Wood (Ajax, ON) powered the Huskies offence with a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds, which include nine offensive rebounds.

Emma Valikoski (Espoo, Finland), Laura Langille (Bedford, NS) and Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, QC) each added nine points in the win for Saint Mary's.

Rounding out the Huskies scoring were Angelina Carvery (Halifax, NS) and Jenny Lewis (Fall River, NS) with six points apiece while Katrina Murrell (Markham, ON) added five points.

The Huskies have three games this week worth twelve points.

They hit the road Tuesday night taking on 3-12 STFX and then return home for a two-game home stand versus CIS No. 10 15-1 Acadia February 12th and 10-5 CBU February 13th.
