Hawks Edge Huskies 1-0

(Halifax, NS) The Saint Mary's Huskies lost a close game against the Memorial University Sea-Hawks in AUS women's soccer on September 22 at Huskies Stadium.

Play was even in the first half. Memorial had the first few shots, and Huskies keeper Ashley Blank (Cole Harbour, NS) made several saves, including a nice dive to deflect a shot from Maria MacKey (St. John's, NL), and a good save off a rebound that went right to Holly O'Neill (St. John's, NL).

The closest chance of the half came in the 20th minute when the ball was headed backwards by a Huskies defender right to MacKey right in front of the net, who hit the left post with her shot.

Ten minutes later, Paige Vincent (Dartmouth, NS) of Saint Mary's sent a corner kick to the far side of the box to Anelise Karakostas (Victoria, BC), who had lots of time to set up hershot but sent it high.

The first half ended 0-0.

Memorial took the lead 15 minutes into the second half with a goal from first year Kate Hickey (Outer Cove, NL). Blank made an initial save on the play but in a crowd of players right in front of the net, Hickey tapped in the rebound.

The Huskies came close to tying the game with less than 10 minutes to go. Vincent sent a corner kick to Alexa Tymkiw (Vernon, BC) at the top of the box, who headed the ball and sent it past Memorial keeper Sydney Walsh (St. John's, NL) and just wide of the net.

The final score of the game was 1-0.

Memorial's Hickey was the Subway Player of the Game.
