Axewomen hold off Sea-Hawks to open doubleheader weekend

WOLFVILLE – The first place Axewomen volleyball team held off the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Friday night, picking up a 3-1 victory in front of 246 fans.

Acadia opened the first set with a 25-22 victory, followed by Memorial taking the second 25-16.

In the third set it looked like the Sea-Hawks were going to take their first match lead of the season, leading the set by as much as five points, 21-16, but the Axewomen battled back to take it 28-26.

Acadia took the fourth 25-20, with Memorial's late push in the set coming up short.

Alexia Lemay-Evans (Azilda, ON) was named the player of the game for the Axewomen for her performance. She finished the night with 13 kills, 10 digs, a block and block assist.

Taylar Johnston (Nokomis, SK) was named Memorial's player of the game, finishing the night with 10.5 points. She had six kills, three aces, a block and block assist.

The offence ran through Charlotte Dean (Mississauga, ON) for Acadia, who had 27 assists in the match compared to 26 for Karen Greek (Mount Pearl, NL) of the Sea-Hawks.

Defensively, Rebecca Dorsey (Toronto, ON) led Acadia with 15 digs, while Sarah Trowbridge (Sunnyside, NL) had 14 for Memorial.

Prior to the match, Dorsey was recognized for 1,000 career digs, which she achieved in Acadia's recent road victory over the Dalhousie Tigers. As of tonight, she now has 1,058.

Saturday the two teams meet again in their final match of the first half of the season. First serve at Stu Aberdeen Court is set for 1 p.m. Atlantic.
