SMU wins first of two weekend matches versus UNB

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – The Huskies grabbed a third straight win by defeating the UNB Reds 3-1 at the Homburg Centre on Friday night. SMU improves to 10-6 in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball action, while UNB falls to 8-7.

UNB took a tightly contested first set by a score of 25-20. Saint Mary's then tied the game with a 25-21 victory in the second set. The Huskies steamed to a 25-20 win in set three to head into the fourth set, up 2-1. The set began with back and forth action before SMU came out with a 26-24 win to finish the match.

Senior Anna Watt (Calgary, AB) led the way for the Huskies with a double-double, tallying 10 kills and 25 digs. Sophomore Olivia Bell (La Have, NS) recorded 16 kills and added seven digs. Junior Bethany Smith (Moncton, NB) added 13 digs and fifth year Emilla Conlon (Dartmouth, NS) had a team-high 49 assists and tallied three kills.

Victoria Eadle (Gallagher Ridge, NB) paced UNB with nine kills and 13 digs while Robyn Anderson (Jaffray, BC) had eight kills in the loss. Paige Lehto (North Vancouver, BC) had a team-high 30 assists while Kelsie Dukart (Parkland, AB) added 21 digs for the Reds.

The Huskies and Reds close out their weekend series on Saturday February 1st at 2 pm at the Homburg Centre.
