Day One - Thunder Selects SMU 47 Queens 55

(Halifax, N.S.)—Day 1 is in the books at the Thunder Selects Women's Basketball Tournament and the Saint Mary's Huskies found themselves losing Wednesday night, 55-47 to the Queen's University Gaels.

 

In the third and final game on day one, Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) and Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) paced the Gaels with 10 points apiece, who led 13-8 after 10 minutes.

The Huskies outscored Queen's 16-11 in the second quarter and tied the game 24-24 at half.

 

A 17-8 third quarter by Queen's saw the Gaels take a 41-32 lead after thirty minutes.

SMU's 15-14 fourth quarter edge wasn't enough on the night as Queen's held on 55-47.

 

Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, Que.) had 12 points for the Huskies while teammates Jenny Lewis (Fall River, N.S.) and Angelina Carvery (Halifax, N.S.) each had 11.

 

Game two had the McMaster Marauders defeat the Acadia Axewomen 81-70.

Daniella Boiago (Hamilton, Ont.) paced all scorers with 32 points while Clare Kenney (Gananoque, Ont.) had 14 points for McMaster.

 

Paloma Anderson (Phoenix, Arizona) finished with 19 points for Acadia while Chanel Smith (Halifax, N.S.) had 12.  It was a tale of two halves, with Acadia taking a 19-14 first quarter lead and a 24-21 second quarter had the Axewomen up, 43-35 at half.

 

McMaster ended the third quarter with a 24-13 score and held a three-point lead, 59-56 after thirty minutes.  A 22-14 fourth quarter saw the Marauders hold on for an 81-70 victory.

 

In the opening game, the Carleton Ravens beat the Dalhousie Tigers 87-51 with Cynthia Dupont (Waterville, Que.) leading all scorers with 27 points off the bench.

 

Carleton led 25-10 after 10 minutes and extended their cushion 52-27 at half.

A 16-11 third quarter saw the Ravens up 30 after thirty minutes. Carleton outscored Dalhousie 19-13 in the final frame and won 87-51.

 

Catherine Traer (Chelsea, Que.) finished with 20 points while Stephanie Carr (Stittsville, Ont.) had 14.  Shalyn Field (Halifax, N.S.) paced the Tigers with 13 points while Karina May (Moncton, N.B.) had 12 and Robertha Charles (Montreal, Que.) 10.

 

Thursday December 29th Schedule:

3 p.m. McMaster v Dal

5 p.m. Carleton v Saint Mary's

7 p.m. Queen's vs Acadia
