Rugby Axewomen capture second place with win over UPEI

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axewomen rugby team improve to 3-2 with a convincing 45-7 win over the visiting UPEI Panthers. The win over the Panthers helps solidfy a second place finish for the Axewomen as they wrap up the season at Saint Mary's next weekend. The loss for the Panthers drops UPEI to 2-3, losing the season series against the Axewomen 74-24.

Seven minutes into the opening half, Axewoman Angela Govier (New Dundee, Ont.) scored Acadia's first of seven trys. Annie Kennedy (Kingston, Ont.) converted the try. The Panthers worked hard in defending Acadia for 13 minutes but the wall cracked as first year scrum-half Laura Pfleiderer (150 Mile House, B.C.) scored at the 20-minute mark - not converted, to give Acadia an early 12-0 lead.

Pfleiderer was named the Subway Player of the Game, while Panther Anneke Dykerman collected the honours for UPEI.

First year centre Natasha Johnson (Williams Lake, B.C.0 scored her seventh try of the season at the end of the first half to give Acadia a 19-0 halftime lead. Johnson leads the Axewomen with seven trys and is second in the conference.

Third year forward Sarah Boudreau (Middle Sackville, N.S.) opened the second half on a converted try by Kennedy to give the Axewomen a 26-0 lead only a minute into the second frame.

Eight minutes later Govier scored her second try of the night, also converted by Kennedy to pull out to a commanding 33-0 advatage.

Emma Pfleiderer (Williams Lake, B.C.) added a converted try by Kennedy to push Acadia to 40-0 lead. Panther Tara Campbell (Summerside, P.E.I.) answered the Pfleiderer try and Alysha Corrigan (Sherwood, P.E.I.) added the conversion with 18 minutes remaining in the game.

Acadia's Michaela Haley (Washington, D.C.) added Acadia's last try to end the game at 45-7. Kennedy had 10 points - 5 conversions. Kennedy is second in AUS scoring with 42 points, two points behind conference leader Alysha Corrigan of UPEI with 44.
