Huskies top Capers 86-79 to sweep weekend series

(HALIFAX, NS)—The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the visiting Cape Breton University Capers 86-79 on Saturday afternoon in Senior Day from the Homburg Centre in Atlantic university sport men's basketball action.

Kemar Alleyne (Scarborough, ON) paced all scorers with 29 points for Saint Mary's as the 6-2 guard added 10 rebounds and five assists in the win and was named Subway Player of the Game.

SMU held a slim 18-17 advantage after the first quarter and used a 24-16 second quarter and extended their lead to 42-33 after twenty minutes.

A 19-13 third quarter advantage for SMU saw the Huskies up 61-46 after thirty minutes.

Cape Breton outscored SMU 33-25 in the final ten minutes as Saint Mary's held on for the 86-79 victory.

Kyle Hankins (Burlington, ON) powered Cape Breton with 22 points and six rebounds in the loss while Osman Omar (Mississauga, ON) added 18 points and Aaron Hayles (Pickering, ON) had 15.

Indiana Rotondo (Vaughan, ON) chipped in 12 points for CBU who drop to 2-17 in Atlantic university sport action.

Power forward Osman Barrie (Ottawa, ON) recorded a double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds for SMU while Nikita Kasongo (Montreal, QC) had 13 points and Nico Brauner (Wiesbaden, Germany) finished with 12.

Asher Lewis (Ajax, ON) added six points and two rebounds for the Huskies, who improve to 12-6 in conference play.

Cape Breton wraps up their regular-season with a home date versus the 13-5 Acadia Axemen February 23rd.

Saint Mary's hits the road for a weekend series in Newfoundland versus the 5-11 Memorial University Sea-Hawks February 23rd-24th.

Osman Barrie and Asher Lewis played their final game at the Homburg Centre for Saint Mary's University.
