Axemen split weekend against Memorial with 84-74 loss in game two

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – A close game between Memorial and the Axemen opened up at the six-minute mark of the third quarter when the Sea-Hawks recorded a 14-2 run to take a commanding 57-45 lead and eventual 84-74 win in the second of a two game weekend match up.

Tied at 19 after the first quarter of play, the tight battle stretched into the second frame with a halftime 36-34 Axemen advantage.

Deadlocked at 43, the Sea-Hawks' Austin Chambers (Ajax, Ont.) layup and one from a Nick De Palma (Bedford, N.S.) foul was the start of the 14-2 run that would become insurmountable for the Axemen.

Acadia would come as close as 65-61 off of a Kyle Arseneault (Fredericton, N.B.) three-pointer, but Memorial continued to guard their lead closely until the final buzzer.

Subway Player of the Game Vasilije Curcic's (Kragujevac, Serbia) 27 points and 11 rebounds led the Sea-Hawks. Greg Manuel's (Mineville, Nfld.) 12 points off the bench were matched by teammate Nathan Barker (Massey Drive, Nfld.).

Graduating senior forward Kyle Arseneault posted 20 points in his last game on the Stu Aberdeen Court. Ben Miller (Winnipeg, Man.), Nick De Palma and Erik Nissen (Quispamsis, N.B.) had 14, 13 and 12 points respectively. Nissen led the Axemen on the boards with ten rebounds, nine of which were defensive.

The split weekend against Memorial gives the Axemen a final regular season record of 10-10 and 30 points. Memorial finishes the regular season with a 12-8 record and 32 points. The fourth place Sea-Hawks will take on the fifth place Axemen in a quarterfinal match-up next week at the AUS Final 6 championship in Halifax.
