Saint Mary’s beats UPEI 46-34 in defensive battle

(Halifax, NS)--The U Sports No. 8 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies used a 32-point second half to defeat the visiting UPEI Panthers 46-34 Saturday evening in AUS women's basketball action.

 

The Panthers jumped out to a 9-7 lead after 10 minutes and neither team could outscore the other in the second for 7-7 even frame. 

 

UPEI led 16-14 at half.

 

The Huskies broke out in the second half in typical fashion, using a 19-11 third quarter run to take the lead 33-27 after thirty minutes.

 

Saint Mary's added to their lead in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Panthers 13-7 in the final frame.

 

Jane McLaughlin (Fortune, PE) led all scorers and UPEI with 15 points and added six rebounds.

 

Jenna Mae Ellsworth (Charlottetown, PE) added seven points while Carolina Del Santo (Barcelona, Spain) added eight rebounds for the Panthers who drop to 2-3.

 

Montreal, Quebec native Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse paced the Huskies with 13 points and six steals.

 

SMU's Angelina Carvery (Halifax, NS) added nine points and six rebounds while Shanieka Wood (Ajax, Ont.) had six points with eight rebounds.

 

Saint Mary's improves to 6-0 and visits 0-5 StFX November 26th.

 

UPEI hosts 2-3 Memorial November 26-27.

 

Tip-off for all games is 6 p.m.
