Axewomen top visiting Mounties and improve to 2-0

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axewomen soccer team remain undefeated after the first weekend of the AUS season with a tough 2-0 win over the scrappy Mount Allison Mounties.

On a clear but windy day, both teams struggled with the gusts that made some play virtually impossible.

The Axewomen struck early with the advantage of a tail-wind when 2015 AUS Player of the Year Meghan Earle (Mt. Pearl, Nfld.) headed a pass into the net but was deflected by a Mountie defender, counting as an own goal at the 15-minute mark.

Mountie Keeper Tess Ritchie was tested often in the first half and second, making nine saves on 11 shot on goal. Richie was named the Mount Allison Player of the Game for her effort between the posts.

Early in the second half, at the 52nd minute, fifth year striker Kinsella Noseworthy Smith recorded her third goal of the weekend to give the Axewomen a 2-0 lead while they faced the stiff wind.

Fourth year Axewomen keeper Emma Connell saved one shot and captured her second win of the season.

Perennial All-Canadian defender Emily Nickerson was named the Subway Player of the Game for her dominant defensive play.

The Axewomen will head to UPEI next Friday night to take on the Panthers, while the Mounties visit Saint Mary's on Friday and host Cape Breton on Sunday in Sackville, N.B.
