Tigers taken down by Axewomen

The Dalhousie Tigers fell to the Acadia Axewomen for the second time this week, losing 89-65 on Saturday at Dalplex.

The Tigers got off to a quick start in the first quarter. Eva Widmeyer (Dartmouth, NS) got the steal, leading to Simona Matic (Belgrade, Serbia) driving to the rim and receiving the foul. She knocked down both free throws and got another layup off a Tigers steal in transition with 8:48 left of the first.

Elizabeth-Ann Iseyemi (Dartmouth, NS) got it started for the Axewomen with a jump shot and would finish with 18 points in the first half. Widmeyer then hit a 3-pointer to make it 7-2 Dal.

Iris Leuschner (Antigonish, NS) and Kaitlyn Ferrier (Calgary, AB) exchanged 3-pointers, making it 10-6 Dal with 5:48 left of the first. Ferrier led the Tigers in scoring on the night with 17 points and added eight rebounds.

Acadia led after the first quarter 21-13 as Ryan George (Moncton, NB) got the buzzer-beater off a layup.

It was 28-15 Acadia with 7:35 left of the second quarter. Acadia would keep this lead as Ferrier hit a 3-pointer to try to cut into the lead and made it 35-22 with 5:05 remaining of the half.

Lisa Bolander (Uppsala, Sweden) extended the Axewomen lead with a 3-pointer to make it 42-28 with 2:35 left of the half. 

George made another layup at the buzzer to end the half, giving the Axewomen a 46-30 lead heading into the second half.

The Axewomen would start the third quarter with a pump fake from George, turning into an open layup. 

Widmeyer hit a tough 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down to cut the lead to 60-41. She finished with 15 points and three 3-pointers. Samantha Russell (Dartmouth, NS), finishing the game with 18 points, would hit a tough 3-pointer of her own with the and-one to extend Acadia's lead to 71-47 with 1:45 left of the frame.

Matic would spark the fourth quarter for the Tigers with a layup. However, Acadia continued to dominate, with Bolander hitting a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 84-58 with 5:42 left of the game. Bolander finished the game with 14 points and four 3-pointers. 

The Tigers did not have an answer for Iseyemi, who finished with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

The Tigers next game comes against the AUS champions on Wednesday against the SMU Huskies at 6pm at Dalplex.
